Steps To Getting Your Motorcycle License

BASIC HANDLING SKILLS TEST (BHST)

The Basic Handling Skills Test (BHST) is the first step in getting you licensed and ready to ride.

CoastRider offers three different length sessions so that you can book according to your comfort levels and personal preferences;

1

BHST 1 HOUR

For those that have spent time practicing their basic skills at home and feel somewhat confident, this is a good option. The BHST will be conducted in a thorough but timely manner to get you on the road and ready to ride.

1.5

BHST 1.5 HOURS

For those that like to take a bit more time, the 1.5 Hour option is extra thorough and allows you to learn and go at your pace. Walk the courses, get tips and practice in with the examiners guidance to help you get riding confidently.

2

BHST 2 HOURS

For those with very limited experience on bikes, the 2 Hour option lets you ease into the test with in-depth guidance and plenty of encouragement! Get as many practice runs in as you like, take your time and get that BHST!

LICENSING

There are two paths you can take to continue your licensing journey, CBTA (Competency-Based Training and Assessment) or practical tests.

CoastRider recommends the CBTA route because;

  • it can reduce the time it takes you to gain your restricted and/or full motorcycle licence.

  • it improves your riding skill levels by targeting high-risk riding behaviours.

  • you'll can get more feedback on your riding skills and tips on how to ride smarter and safer.

CoastRider offers the following CBTA certifications:

Restricted

CBTA-R

Once you have your learner licence, you can sit your assessment ride for CBTA 6R as soon as you feel you’re ready to. (It is recommended you ride at least 120 hours and complete a "Ride Forever" Bronze-Level course to sharpen your skills.)

Upon completion, you can take your CBTA 6R certificate and apply for your restricted motorcycle licence at any time.

Full

CBTA-F

You can sit the CBTA 6F assessment once you've held your restricted licence for at least 9 months and feel ready to. (It is recommended you complete a "Ride Forever" Silver-Level course to sharpen your skills before sitting this.)

Upon completion, you can take your CBTA 6F certificate and apply for your full motorcycle licence at any time.
