FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own bike?

No, you do not need your own bike. You can use your own bike if it is LAMS approved, but it is recommended for the BHST to use the bike supplied by CoastRider.

For CBTAs, you have the option of hiring a supplied bike or using your own bike.

How should I prepare for my license theory test?

For free theory tests visit drivertraining.co.nz and select class 6. For paid tests visit AA and answer the class 6 questions, it's $20 for 20 tests.

Do I need to have a motorbike licence to ride a scooter?

If your scooter is under 50cc and is classed as a moped it can be ridden on a Class 1 license. If it is a scooter over 50cc then yes, you need a Class 6 Motorcycle license.

Do I need to do a CBTA as well as a practical test for my restricted or full?

No. The CBTA is a practical test, but a different kind. Both the CBTA and the Practical Tests are valid ways of obtaining your license, but you only need to do one or the other.

CoastRider recommends the CBTA route and thus offers these services.

What areas do you service?

We are based in Gulf Harbour on the Hibiscus Coast, 20 minutes from Silverdale. BHSTs will take place in Whangaparāoa and Silverdale, the CBTAs will take place from Silverdale around various nearby roads with a mixture of high speed and low speed riding.

I have never ridden a bike before but want to start, what should I book?

If you are a complete learner, and don't know how to ride a bike at all (turn on, gears, accelerate, balance etc.) we run a 2 hour BHST session aimed at those who have never ridden before. We also have 1 1/2 hour BHST sessions and 1 hour BHST sessions for more confident riders.

Can I do any tests on my scooter?

Legally, you can but it must be classified as a scooter, not a moped, so it must be more than 50cc.

Can you issue my motorbike license?

No, CoastRider can only certify that you've shown a satisfactory level of skill necessary for your licence. You will take these certifications to AA/ VTNZ to issue your motorbike license.

Do you offer Ride Forever courses?

What are LAMS bikes?

LAMS stands for Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme. They are the only bikes you are allowed to ride on your Learners and Restricted Motorcycle license. You can read more about them here.

I have a bike but it isn't LAMS approved, how can I sit my license?

Get in touch, we may have a LAMS approved bike available for hire when you book your test. Please ensure you are only riding LAMS approved motorcycles when on your Learners or Restricted license.

How long will it take to become fully licensed?

The minimum amount of time it could take you from scratch to have your full license in hand is 12 months.

There is no minimum amount of time between sitting your BHST (Learners) and CBTA-R (Restricted) - you just have to be able to show a satisfactory level of competency.

After 9 months of holding your Restricted license, you can sit your CBTA-F (Full) but the license cannot be issued until you've held your Restricted for 12 months.

What gear should I bring?

You must wear enclosed shoes, a front-fastening jacket (hoodies also acceptable) and long pants.

You must also wear a helmet and gloves but these can be provided for you by CoastRider.

We recommend when riding to wear "all the gear, all the time."
